Medical Records Transcriptionist

Program Objectives

Medical transcriptionists listen to dictated recordings made by physicians and other healthcare professionals and transcribe into medical reports, correspondence, and other administrative material. Medical terminology and good grammar skills are a must. Medical Transcriptionists may have other duties much like those of medical office assistants, and some of their responsibilities include:

  • Transcribes medical dictation from doctors to be placed in the permanent medical file of a patient
  • Translates medical language and abbreviations into their expanded forms
  • Creates correspondence documents using word processing with medical terminology emphasis
  • Produces summaries, reports, diagnostic imaging studies, and referral letters
  • Achieve a minimum typing speed of 60WPM
Desired Personal Attributes:
  • An ability to work independently
  • Good spelling, punctuation, and grammar
  • Knowledge and interest of medical terminology, spreadsheets, word processing, and database programs
  • Proficiency in technological software for medical office application
Career Opportunities:

Beyond the standard clerical, computer, and office skills needed for employment, medical offices require the knowledge of specific terminology in medical preparations and the ability to transcribe. Many hospitals and clinics are in need of quality transcriptionists.
