Medical Office Specialist

Program Objectives

The Medical Office diploma program provides the graduate with the necessary computer and specific medical office skills to gain employment in the medical field. The program prepares the student to pursue certification testing in medical insurance and coding.

Some of the principle duties include:

  • Performs medical coding (CPT4 and ICD9), and learns billing procedures on medical software
  • Maintains filing, inventory and database systems
  • Performs accounting and other reporting mechanisms using spreadsheets and medical office software
  • Medical transcription of documents
Desired Personal Attributes:
  • Proficiency in technological software for medical office application
  • An ability to use tact, discretion, judgment, and organizational skills
  • A good understanding of medical terminology, medical coding and insurance
  • Recommended minimum keyboarding/typing speed of 35 WPM
Career Opportunities:

Beyond the standard clerical, computer, and office skills needed for employment in the normal office, medical offices require the knowledge of specific terminology in medical preparations. Medical coding, preparation of insurance forms, medical filing, and medical transcription are skills being sought continually by all types of medical related businesses across the nation.
